Description

In 1885, three Hawaiian princes rode waves at the San Lorenzo Rivermouth — and mainland American surfing was born. This is the only tour that walks you to that exact spot and tells you the full story. Santa Cruz isn't just a surf town — it's THE surf town. This is where mainland surfing in America truly began, where wetsuit innovation flourished, and where surf culture evolved from Hawaiian roots into the phenomenon it is today. On this oceanfront journey, you'll walk in the footsteps of legends — from those three Hawaiian princes to the modern shapers and surfers who continue to push the sport forward. We'll explore iconic surf spots, learn to read the waves and conditions, discover the innovations that flourished in Santa Cruz (like wetsuit and skateboard technology), and understand how surf culture permeates every aspect of this coastal community. Along the way, you'll also encounter sea lions, harbor seals, seabirds, and maybe even dolphins or whales, experiencing the vibrant marine ecosystem that makes Santa Cruz special. This tour isn't just about surfing history — it's about understanding how the ocean shapes everything about life in this unique coastal town.

Quick Questions

Do I need to surf to enjoy this tour?

Not at all. This is a history and culture walk, not a surf lesson. About half our guests have never surfed. If you're curious about what makes Santa Cruz tick, this tour is for you.

What should I wear?

Comfortable walking shoes and layers. West Cliff can be windy even on warm days. The walk is about 1.5 miles on paved paths — easy for most fitness levels.

Is this OK for kids?

Yes! Kids 6–17 are $30 and kids 5 and under are free with a paid adult. The stories are engaging enough to hold most kids' attention, and the ocean views help.

How far in advance do I need to book?

We recommend booking at least a few days ahead — spots go fast on weekends. Full refund if you cancel 24+ hours before the tour.

Matt Knows His Surf

Surfing magazine co-founder  ·  O'Neill Coldwater Classic competitor  ·  Surfing Santa Cruz since the '70s

This tour was built on decades of lived experience — not just studying Santa Cruz surf culture, but living it.

It started with boogie boarding at the Wharf in the late '70s, then graduated to stand-up surfing at Cowells and Steamer Lane. Competing in the O'Neill Coldwater Classic. Co-founding a regional surf magazine called The Juice in the early '90s — documenting the surf culture from the inside. Teaching friends and family to surf. Getting the next generation hooked early. Chasing waves all around the world. And still surfing today. 🏄‍♂️

This tour was built on that knowledge — the surf history, the culture, and especially the stoke. Book your spot on the Santa Cruz Surf Walk - History & Culture Tour and discover what makes Santa Cruz such an amazing place.
