Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our Santa Cruz walking tours

Walk Santa Cruz Tours FAQ

Where can I park?

Street parking is available throughout downtown Santa Cruz. Most tours meet near downtown, where you'll find metered parking and public parking garages.

We recommend using the ParkMobile app for easy mobile payment at parking meters throughout the city.

The app allows you to pay for parking from your phone, extend your session remotely, and receive notifications before your time expires.

Can I bring my dog?

Dogs on leash are welcome to join our tours! They're allowed in all public areas where they would normally be permitted.

Please ensure your dog is well-behaved, on a leash at all times, and comfortable walking in groups. Don't forget to bring water for your furry friend!

Is tipping expected?

Tips are appreciated but not required. If you enjoyed your tour and felt your guide provided exceptional service, gratuities are always welcome as a way to show your appreciation.

How strenuous are the tours?

All of our tours are suitable for anyone with a moderate activity level — if you're comfortable walking for an hour or two at a relaxed pace, you'll do great.

The Heart of Downtown and Beach Hill Loop tours include a tall flight of steps on the route. These can be taken slowly, and there's no rush. For those who prefer to avoid stairs entirely, there's a sidewalk alternative for reaching the top of Mission Hill — just let your guide know and they'll route accordingly. Keep in mind the sidewalk route still involves some incline.

The Surf Walk follows paved paths along West Cliff Drive with ocean views the entire way. There is one gentle hill with both an incline and decline, but it's manageable for most activity levels.

Are the tours good for kids?

Yes! Kids who've joined our tours have genuinely enjoyed the experience — walking around, seeing new places, and picking up on fun facts and stories. Tours work best for children who are comfortable walking for 90 minutes to 2.5 hours depending on the tour.

Children ages 6–17 are $30, and kids 5 and under are free with a paid adult ticket.

Do I need to surf or know about surfing to enjoy the Surf Walk?

Not at all. The Santa Cruz Surf Walk is a great experience for locals, visitors, surfers, and anyone curious about why this town has such a deep obsession with the ocean. The tour covers the history of surfing in Santa Cruz, what makes the breaks here special, and how surf culture has shaped the community — all told in a way that's engaging whether you've never touched a surfboard or you've been surfing for years.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Our tours run rain or shine. Santa Cruz has mild weather year-round, and a little overcast or light drizzle won't stop us. Tours are only cancelled in the event of genuinely dangerous conditions — which is rare. If we do need to cancel, you'll hear from us with as much advance notice as possible.

What is the cancellation policy?

We offer a full refund for cancellations made 24 or more hours before the tour start time. Cancellations within 24 hours are not eligible for a refund.

Are there bathroom breaks?

Yes. There is bathroom access at the start and end of each tour, and a few options along the route as well. If you need a stop, just let your guide know — they'll accommodate as best they can.

Are the tours accessible? What about stairs and hills?

All of our tours include some elevation gain. The Heart of Downtown and Beach Hill Loop tours also include stairs — if you'd prefer to avoid them, let your guide know before the tour and they'll route you via sidewalk instead, though that route still has inclines and declines. We'll do our best to make the experience work for you.

I've lived in Santa Cruz for years — will I still learn something new?

Almost certainly. Locals are often among our most enthusiastic guests. There's a lot of history, architecture, and local lore that most people — even longtime residents — haven't come across. The interactive format makes it a different kind of experience than just knowing a place from living there.

What should I wear and bring?

Comfortable walking shoes are the most important thing. Check the local weather the morning of your tour — Santa Cruz can shift quickly, so layers are smart if it's cool. A sun hat and sunglasses are worth bringing if you're sensitive to sun.

The Heart of Downtown and Beach Hill Loop tours have plenty of shade from trees and buildings. The Surf Walk runs mostly in full sun on clear days, so sun protection is especially useful there.
